45th President Donald Trump is considering a July campaign launch for his third run for the presidency, controversially before the midterms, with a potential rally in Florida to fend off a challenge from Governor Ron DeSantis.
According to multiple sources close to President Trump, he is considering a kicking off a new campaign for president in spectacular fashion, with a launch rally, complete with fireworks. In terms of location, Florida appears to be the first choice, in order to show potential primary competitor Governor Ron DeSantis “who the boss is,” one source noted.
Trump allegedly even inquired with associates if they know any potential event locations that happened to be right around the corner from the Florida Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee.
“One time that he did bring up the Florida [launch] scenario was quickly followed by him commenting on how terrible DeSantis was at public speaking and commanding an audience … [and that he’s] lacking in so much charisma and he’s so boring that Florida Republicans would leave Ron immediately for Trump [in a 2024 match-up],” a source told Rolling Stone.
There are both advantages and disadvantages for President Trump in having a 2024 campaign launch before the midterms have happened. Jason Miller, the GETTR CEO and former Trump advisor argued that “there being clarity about what his intentions are [is important] so he can start building that operation while it’s still fresh in people’s minds and they’re still active.”
However, if he does announce before the midterms, he would be immediately subject to hard-money fundraising limits, and a ban on co-ordination with his Save America PAC, both things he doesn’t have to currently worry about as a non-candidate. He also will likely draw attention away from the midterms themselves, with a second advisor pointing out that it could help Biden.
“The clearest, cleanest path is to have a cage-match rematch,” they told NBC. “If you have that rematch too early, it could actually help Biden a little bit,” adding that “Trump in modest doses has been good for Trump.”
Regardless, thoughts are that Trump is likely to launch his campaign sooner rather than later. “A betting person says he’s doing it, and he also wants to crowd out the rest of the field,” the advisor noted.
Speaking to NBC, Taylor Budowich, a Trump spokesman said that people were ready for the 45th President to come back. “America was strong, prosperous and greatly respected under President Trump, and that’s why he continues to have unprecedented strength through his endorsement record and the demand for his leadership has never been higher,” he said.
Valiant News reported last week that President Trump said that the protests on January 6 “represented the greatest movement in the history of our Country to Make America Great Again,” arguing that the January 6 committee “didn’t spend one minute studying the reason that people went to Washington, D.C., in massive numbers.”
